Rookhope Business Centre opens its doors to new tenants
A FORMER County Durham school has opened its doors to the community after being transformed
into a business and community hub.
The first tenants of Rookhope Business Centre are finding their feet, after the former Rookhope
Primary School was fully refurbished into business units and community facilities. Managed by
Durham County Council’s business support service, Business Durham, the centre is designed to
support local businesses and the local community, by providing professional amenities and a hub for
nearby residents.
Located in the heart of the Durham Dales, Rookhope Business Centre offers flexible workspace
solutions without the need to travel longer distances to access suitable business premises. In
addition to the affordable, flexible office and workspace units which are idea for small businesses
and remote workers, the centre includes two community rooms and a kitchen, as well as potential
for a library or book swap area or other local community activity.

Vicky Smith has taken over the running of the Rookhope Kitchen after having a personal
connection with the building. She said: “We’ve lived in Rookhope for 18 years now, and our children
went to the school, so it’s really special to see the building being used again.
“It’s great to see life returning to the village, and with Rookhope Kitchen, we’re excited to be part
of that and help bring even more energy to the community we love.”
The centre has the potential to create up to 20 new jobs when it’s at capacity.
Cllr Tim McGuinness, the council’s Cabinet member for rural communities, said: “We’re delighted
that tenants are starting to move into Rookhope Business Centre. It’s so important that local
businesses can grow and succeed, and these fantastic facilities offer the perfect workspace solution
to small businesses in the local community.
“Developing these opportunities in rural areas will help to supercharge the economy across the
wider county and create a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth in our rural
communities.
“We look forward to seeing the centre – and its tenants – go from strength to strength as it
welcomes residents, businesses and budding entrepreneurs through its doors over the coming
months and years.”
