Ramblings of an Old Man. ( Part 3 )
IN case anyone missed part 2 it came under the heading ” Election fever hits Weardale “last week.
Still available. But to bring us closer to the ballot box let’s see how things are ramping up….
The last scribblings of the contenders have rattled the letter boxes and we are now in a better position to scrutinise, digest and consider the content therein. What will we find? A plethora of promises? A veritable vision for the future? Perhaps a genuine desire to take the area forward. Or maybe just a sack of snake oil and recycled words.
Let’s sort the Pulitzer Prize winners from the Penny Dreadfuls. As per usual, in Alphabetical order ..
The Conservatives.
Prioritising road safety, speed limits in villages, public transport and anti social behaviour as well as offering regular surgeries to listen to people’s concerns. And all this without claiming expenses. On paper, quite commendable.
The Green Party.
Nothing here. Is there anybody there?
The Labour Party.
Nothing. No canvassing, no glossy brochure, nowt. Which at the current moment is probably the best they could offer.
The Liberal Democrats.
Much the same as Labour really. Maybe the jet ski grounded at Stanhope ford.
Reform.
The Unknown Quantity. Surging in the National polls. Telling people what they want to hear. Wanting to stop the boats. Scrapping Net Zero. Sending the auditors into County Halls. Mending broken Britain. Rhetoric not heard for years, and, it would seem, transcending to the local levels of government. Whatever your thoughts are, if I were a candidate I would be quite worried.
The Independents. The current councillors.
I read the leaflets with interest. I do have both of them.
One of which details the many organisations and committees in Weardale assisted by the candidate and with the promise to keep working for the area without taking any expenses is wholly commendable. But is it enough? Time will tell.
The other leaflet is a bit more interesting. Or was it? Nothing new. A bit like recycling old words. Assuming victory by stating you will be including Tow Law in your plans post election. Mentioning the Wolsingham resurfacing last year which had to be done after the mess made of it the previous year. At least the old tar planings were reused. As for being a Governor at Wolsingham School for many years l just wonder how many years it is since you left that position as I could not find any mention of you on the last few years governors list. Probably a printing error. And of course the normal stance of slagging off the opposition without having much in the way of forward thinking yourself. But…. Perhaps I wouldn’t be quite so confident this time. The electorate is changing. People may be looking for change. Who knows? It’ll only get messier.
So we’re reasonably up to date. I’ve saved a few bits for Part 4 next week when we may find that the excrement could well be hitting the extraction system. Let’s hope it all continues in a fair and honest vein. Aye Right. Until then…
BT.
