The hunt is on in the North East for the next Steven Spielberg, Greta Gerwig or Ridley Scott.
Aspiring filmmakers aged 16–19 have a unique FREE opportunity to take their first steps into the film and television industry with the BFI Film Academy in the North East this autumn. Supported by the British Film Institute, this exciting programme offers a series of four nationally recognised short courses across the region, to empower the next generation of filmmakers with the practical skills and industry insights young people need to break into the film and television industry.
Delivered by Jack Drum Arts working in partnership with ACT 2 CAM, Beacon Films and Writers Block North East each short course provides a fast-paced introduction to filmmaking, offering hands on training across all areas of film production, from pre-production and screenwriting, to camera, sound, editing, and film scoring. Young people will have access to state-of-the-art film equipment, as well as mentorship from expert trainers trainers and guest speakers, many of whom are seasoned professionals in the industry.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for emerging filmmakers in the North East,” says Helen Ward, of Jack Drum Arts, which leads the North East Consortium delivering the programme. “Not only will young people receive practical training, but they will also be immersed in the creative process of filmmaking alongside other like-minded individuals. Our goal is to foster new talent, provide valuable connections, and support young people as they develop their own projects and find their way in a rapidly growing industry.”
Each short course delivered in the North East will cover a wide range of topics, including script development, camera techniques, sound design, editing, and the distribution process. Young people will also have the chance to work on a short film production as part of a production team, with opportunities for their work to be showcased at local film festivals and other industry events.
“It couldn’t be a better time to be running the short courses,” says Helen. “There are many opportunities for work in this region, from big, Hollywood films like the latest Indiana Jones, to fun sitcoms based in Middlesbrough, like Smoggy Queens.”
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your filmmaking abilities, the course offers invaluable insight into the professional world of film production. Limited places are available, so young people are encouraged to apply early to secure a place.
