A determined Wolsingham School student has successfully completed the iconic Coast-to-Coast cycle route across northern England to raise funds for a life-changing volunteering expedition to Nepal in 2027.

Darcy Smith, who celebrated her 15th birthday just two days before setting off, took on the challenge after being selected to join a group from Wolsingham School on a volunteering expedition to Nepal.

During the 2027 trip, Darcy will spend time volunteering in a local school while learning about Nepal’s rich culture, history and religious heritage.

To help fund the expedition, Darcy suggested tackling her biggest cycling challenge to date, riding the Coast-to-Coast route from Whitehaven to Sunderland.

Having grown up on two wheels, cycling has always been a huge part of Darcy’s life, but this was by far the most ambitious challenge she had undertaken. Although an experienced mountain biker, the C2C route was a completely different test. The endurance required to cover long distances on the road, combined with some gruelling climbs, tested Darcy both physically and mentally, making her achievement all the more impressive.

Despite the demanding hills and long hours in the saddle, Darcy approached every mile with determination and maintained a positive attitude throughout. Sunshine accompanied much of the journey, allowing Darcy and her support crew to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery along the route. From the mountains and lakes of Cumbria, across the dramatic Pennine landscapes and through the rolling countryside of County Durham, the challenge offered stunning views at every turn before ending in Sunderland beneath a bright blue sky. The scenery provided a spectacular backdrop to an incredible achievement and created memories that Darcy will cherish for years to come.

Darcy’s proud parents, Faye and Jason Smith, supported Darcy along the route.

Jason said:

“Watching Darcy complete the Coast-to-Coast has been incredible.

The route was far from easy, and some of the climbs were absolutely brutal, but Darcy just kept pushing. She took every mile in her stride and kept a smile on her face the whole way through.

Darcy’s determination, resilience and positive attitude never wavered, even when she was tired and faced with another long, steep hill.

Watching Darcy grow in confidence and prove what she is capable of has been incredibly special. We couldn’t be prouder.”

The ride forms part of Darcy’s continuing fundraising efforts for the volunteering expedition to Nepal in 2027. The expedition will give her the opportunity to support a local school, develop new skills, and experience another culture.

Faye added:

“The Nepal expedition will be an incredible opportunity for Darcy. We are extremely grateful for the support and encouragement Darcy has received from friends, family and the wider community throughout her fundraising journey.”
