Youngsters with a flair for business
TWO young brothers from Hamsterley are building up their own business before they finish their
primary school education.
Edward and Reuben Williamson are 6 and 4 years old respectively but incredibly, they are already
earning their own money! They have 13 Runner Ducks and 20 Gingernut Ranger Chickens that they
care for all by themselves and sell their eggs.
Edward, as the older brother, is in charge but encourages and educates Reuben. Their mother,
Helen, said, “ Edward does everything to do with ducks and chickens. He cleans them out, feeds,
waters and collects the eggs. Reuben just does as his big brother tells him.
“Edward is out every morning, no matter the weather, to let them out before school and rounds
them up for bed on an evening.”
He attends Hamsterley Primary School but Reuben has yet to start school! They are the sons of a
farmer so were born into a farming life where everything depends on reproduction.
Edward already has ambitions for him and his brother to be self-employed when they are older.
He is already contemplating buying machinery to hire out – that is his ambition for later life! And he
knows exactly what he wants – ‘a big John Deere Tractor and a JCB 220x tracked excavator’. He has
Bruder models of the ones he wants on his bedroom – shelf next to his egg money box!
For Christmas, he asked for an incubator so he could hatch the eggs to increase his customer
base. And, of course, Santa obliged and the boys are now actively hatching chicken eggs until the
ducks start to lay again.
Edward is certainly a lad with his head screwed on and with a definite flair for business.
The boys, who also have a younger sister, sell their duck eggs for £2.50 for half a dozen and
charge £1.50 for six chicken eggs. There is a delivery service in Hamsterley and Fir Tree and also a
kerbside collection available.
