THE weekly Wolsingham Playgroup, which is a vital tool for parents (and grandparents) to network
and meet to chat while the children bond with other pre-school kids is open to everyone, every
Monday morning in term-time.
The group benefits from the help of a few grandmothers who open up the St Anne’s Centre where
the playgroup is held every Monday between 9:30am and 11:30am. They help to set it all up and
they take it all down and put it away at the end of the session. In between, Julie Foster from the
town, who is a fully qualified Learning Support Assistant and Teaching Assistant, encourages the
young members in simple craft sessions.
This week, they were decorating biscuits with seasonal pictures, including snowmen. One of the
former mothers whose child is now in primary school acts as Treasurer to the group and they all pull
together to provide this vital group.
This kind of community group is vital, especially in a rural area like ours where isolation can be a
huge problem for young mothers. The playgroup has every facility, lots of games, toys and so much
more. The kitchen provides snack time too.
The cost is £2 if the child has a snack or if not, just £1 per session. New families are always made
welcome. No need to book, just turn up any Monday morning in term-time – closed during school
holidays.
