WOLSINGHAM BRIDGE PREPARING FOR EXTENSIVE WORK
THE only bridge across the river Wear in Wolsingham is being prepared for extensive work to keep it
safe.
The Causeway Bridgem known locally as the ‘Blue Bridge’ because of it’s earlier colour scheme,
dates back to 1894 and now requires ‘extensive refurbishment’ to repair age-related damage.
Mark Readman, head of highways, at Durham County Council, said: “The Causeway Bridge in
Wolsingham dates back to 1894 and requires essential maintenance work to ensure it can continue
to be used for generations to come.
“We initially planned to undertake these works last summer, with a full closure in place for 20
weeks. However, after listening to local concerns, we were able to safely defer these works until this
spring to reduce the impact on tourism and the farming community.
“Work is currently scheduled to start during May, and we will endeavour to maintain vehicle and
pedestrian access as much as possible while the repairs are undertaken. Due to the nature of the
works, however, there will be occasions when a full closure is needed. We will be sharing details of
the programme, and any diversions required, in due course.”
The works will include removing the existing road surface so that repairs can be carried out to the
concrete below. Scaffolding will be put up and steel within the bridge will either be repaired or
replaced. Existing beams will be reinforced ahead of painting and improvements to the structure’s
surface drainage system, before a new road surface is laid.
