WOLSINGHAM Angling Club are holding a competition for its members at Grassholme Reservoir on Sunday May 10th in honour of one of Wolsingham’s finest fishermen and all-round gentleman, Billy Lambert.

Richard Dobson, Secretary of Wolsingham Angling Club, said, “ Following the success of WAC Junior fishing days at local reservoirs we thought we would give all members the chance to fish together in a friendly in-club competition which we have named The Billy Lambert Cup.”

Billy Lambert worked at the local steelworks for 51 years, and his favourite pastime was fishing. For 80 years he fished the waters of the Wear, the Tees and the Eden, along with Tunstall and Derwent reservoirs. When he retired from fishing the Northern Echo ran a full page spread entitled ‘The fish in the Wear can smile again’.

“Not only was Billy a fine fisherman, he was also an absolute gentleman and we are so pleased as a club to honour this great man,” added Richard.

The winner of the competition will be determined by the heaviest caught fish on the day, we hope it will be a great way for the members of our club to come together for a day’s fishing.
