Founder & CEO of Holdham Group, Luke Allan Holmes, has been named the North East’s Most Visionary Young Entrepreneur & Community Leader at this year’s Northern Enterprise Awards, in a major boost for a business with deep roots in Weardale.

At the same awards, Holdham Group itself was also recognised, receiving the Innovation & Leadership Excellence Award, reflecting the company’s rapid growth, strong values, and leadership across the rail and transport sector.

Holdham Group manages and oversees Bishop Trains, Excursions By Rail, and Holdham Rail, with operations spanning mainline charter services, national and international rail ticketing and community-focused rail initiatives.

The recognition comes in a standout year for Luke, who was also named Rising Star at the North East Business Awards earlier this year.

Excursions By Rail recently announced its second mainline charter to depart directly from Weardale, this time running to Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 20th June 2026. Tickets are expected to go on sale in the New Year, with further special services set to be unveiled in the coming weeks as part of what Luke has described as a “very busy calendar” for 2026.

Luke, who grew up in Wolsingham, paid tribute to his team and to a key figure in the company’s journey.

“I’m incredibly proud to receive this recognition, but these awards are a testament to the hard work, commitment and belief of our whole team,” Luke said.

“In particular, I want to recognise David Million, the former CEO of Bishop Trains. David dedicated his life to the railway and to giving opportunities to others. His passion, integrity and leadership shaped so much of what we are building today. We dedicate these awards to him and his lifelong dedication to the industry.”

Luke added that growing up in Weardale had shaped both his personal values and the company’s focus on community impact.

“Coming from Wolsingham, I’ve always believed that world-class ideas and businesses can be built right here in the North East. Our ambition has never just been growth for its own sake, but to build something lasting that creates opportunity, supports communities and puts our region on the map.”

The Northern Enterprise Awards celebrate excellence among SMEs across the UK, recognising innovation, leadership and positive community impact.
