Weardale Community Invited to Shape a Locally Owned Energy Future

Eastgate Village Hall | Monday 9 March | 9.30am–12.00pm

Residents, charities, and community organisations from across Weardale are invited to a Weardale Community Owned Energy event on Monday 9 March, taking place at Eastgate Village Hall from 9.30am to 12.00pm.

The morning event will showcase an ambitious and inspiring vision: renewable energy owned by the community, managed locally, and delivering long-term benefit for Weardale.

Led by Weardale Renewables, the event brings together local charities, community groups, and residents to explore how community-owned renewable energy can strengthen local services, keep money circulating locally, and invest profits into a Community Trust Fund for the benefit of future generations.

A Morning of Connection, Collaboration and Community Power

The event will feature:

  • A warm welcome with tea and coffee
  • Short, accessible talks on community-owned energy
  • A showcase of local charities and organisations
  • Informal networking and conversations
  • Opportunities for residents to get involved in shaping Weardale’s energy future

At the heart of the event is the Heights Quarry Solar Farm, a major community-led project with a fundraising target of £735,000, designed to generate clean energy while reinvesting surplus income into local causes.

Why It Matters

Community-owned energy projects ensure that:

  • Assets are owned by local people
  • Profits are reinvested locally
  • Local businesses are used wherever possible
  • Communities gain long-term resilience and energy security

This model helps tackle rising energy costs, supports charities and community services, and creates a more sustainable future for Weardale.

Everyone Welcome

The event is open to all residents, supporters, and organisations who care about Weardale’s future — whether they are curious to learn more, keen to support local charities, or interested in becoming part of a growing community-led energy movement.

No technical knowledge is required — just community spirit.
