Stanhoper’s warning over doorbell security systems

A LADY from Stanhope who had her quad bike stolen from outside her house has issued a warning to others regarding the false security ring door bells can give.

There have been several daring thefts around the Dale recently with one thief, after stealing a motorcycle, using the railway to flee the scene, presumably taking it further down the line to escape police automatic number plate recognition cameras.

The victim, who we have decided not to name, is a hardworking mother and grandmother who suffers from an auto immune illness. She has, however, sent out a warning to others with regard to anti-theft and other devices designed to give a sense of security.

She said that cheap China-based on-line companies are offering a device that will ‘jam’ such security devices that work via the internet. These devices block ring door bell security systems  and others that use wi-fi by blocking the signal. The victim lives on an estate and after the theft, she made enquiries with neighbours only to find that their security measures had stopped working for an hour or so around the time of the theft.

She said, “Please take a minute to look on YouTube and you will see how these devices work to knock out your security devices and render them useless for around two to four hours. If you are thinking of spending money to buy such security gadgets that operate by your wi-fi signal, think again and seek more reliable measures.”

After discovering the theft, she checked her own ring door bell footage and before the culprits could jam the wi-fi signal, she caught the image of a man standing outside her door, next to the quad, just before the wi-fi was jammed and no further footage was obtainable.

She continued, “To prevent such a theft, use a wired connection for your security devices, install a system with a cellular back-up or use a higher frequency like 5GHz, if possible.”

For more information or help, contact local police who may be able to advise you. In the meantime, ensure all valuables, including vehicles are securely locked.
