STANHOPE GIRLS’ EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR OVERSEAS HUMANITARIAN TRIPS

STANHOPE GIRLS’ EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR OVERSEAS HUMANITARIAN TRIPS
TWO sisters from Stanhope have organised an event to raise money for their planned humanitarian
trips abroad.
Bekah Sawyer (18) is planning a trip to Zambia in June, to visit a charity where upper Dale resident,
Rachel Swaffield is a Trustee. The Wynaud Trust ( https://wynaudtrust.org/ ) works in the Kabomo
district, Northwest province of Zambia. This is a rural area, where the majority of the population are
subsistence farmers. There is significant hardship and the trust seeks to work in three areas:
education, health and income generation.
Bekah will spend three months there, involving herself in various activities, including volunteering
in Early Years provision at a local school, teaching young girls how to make sanitary products and
assisting with English speaking lessons for older pupils.
16-year-old Esther, a pupil at Wolsingham School, will travel with fellow pupils to Nepal in July
after completing her GCSE exams. She will be based in Kathmandu where she will spend two weeks
experiencing Nepalese culture and supporting students at Shubhakamana School. She will help teach
English and aid students to develop key life skills.
The girls, daughter of the Dale’s Methodist Minister, Rev Bruce and his wife, Caroline, have been
actively fundraising for their respective trips since last year. In November, they organised a ‘Too Cold
for Busking’ event where they performed with their folk band, ‘Wear’d Aliens alongside friends from
‘Cream Teas’.
The event was so successful that they have organised another similar event, which will take place
on Saturday, March 8 th . It will begin at 6pm and be held in Stanhope Methodist church.
Please go along and support these two community minded sisters.
