Residents urged to give views on new council plan
COUNTY Durham residents can have their say on proposed ambitions, objectives, and priorities that
will form a council’s plan for 2025 to 2030.
Following local elections in May, Durham County Council’s new administration is working to set its
priorities so that everyone is clear on the council’s new approach and direction. The current council
plan was agreed in February 2025, and it is the local authority’s main corporate planning document,
describing how it will deliver its objectives over the next four years.
It is important that the plan is reviewed to make sure it meets the new administration’s ambitions
and objectives. In order to develop the plan, a new streamlined framework which focuses on the
immediate needs of County Durham residents has been drafted.
This includes five ambitions which cover a number of objectives and priorities:
Reforming the council to make it an efficient, effective servant of the people, ensuring
taxpayers’ money is spent wisely and well.
Supercharging the economy to make County Durham the best place in the north east to do
business.
Building better communities to ensure a connected, safe, clean and thriving place to live.
Caring for people and supporting those who need it.
A practical rather than ideological environmental stewardship.
Residents can give their views on the plan in several ways, including completing an online survey
at www.letstalkcountydurham.co.uk . Or they can complete a paper survey, which can be picked up
at any County Durham library and returned to the council.
People can also attend an online event on Tuesday 5 August between 6 and 7 pm or Thursday 14
August between 11am and 12pm. To book a place go to www.letstalkcountydurham.co.uk or email
.
Cllr Andrew Husband, leader of Durham County Council, said: “The new council plan is vital for
demonstrating to residents how efficient and effective services can be delivered within a financially
stable council – services that they can value, afford and take pride in.
“We’re urging residents to give their views on the plan and let us know if they feel the proposals
are the right ambitions for the next four years; whether they agree with our proposed objectives and
priorities, or if there’s something we have missed that they feel is important.
“There are a number of ways residents can get involved and no addition is too small, so please do
get in touch.”
Consultation will take place between Tuesday 22 July and Monday 18 August 2025.
