Reminder to check your voter registration details
RESIDENTS are being reminded that the annual canvass is about to begin and to check their voter
registration details.
Durham County Council will be carrying out the canvass to make sure all households’ details in
the county are up to date. If the council holds an email address for any of the registered electors in a
property, it will issue a form via email as part of its digital transformation and to save postage costs.
If an email is not available, forms will be delivered in the post.
The email will originate from Gov.uk Notify and it is important that all members of the household
regularly check their email inbox over the next week to ensure the form is received, as the email
may be issued to any member of the household. Each household should follow the instructions on
the form to ensure the information the council holds is correct.
Residents are also being reminded that they need to register if they wish to vote in any upcoming
elections. Details on how to register on the government portal will also be provided.
Steven Templeton, electoral services manager at Durham County Council, said: “It’s essential that
residents check the information we hold for their household to ensure it is accurate and current.
This helps us maintain an up-to-date electoral register for every address in County Durham.
“For households where we do not have an email address on record, a paper form will be sent by
post. Please follow the instructions on the form to confirm or update your household’s details.
“You must be registered to vote to have your say in elections. If you’re not currently registered, your
name will not appear on the form we send. The easiest way to register is online, or you can contact
our electoral services team to request a paper registration form.”
The next scheduled elections will be the Easington and Shotton by-election and will take place on
Thursday 7 August.
Residents who have recently moved, and not made electoral services aware, or whose details are
not included in the form, can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote .
