Reform winners resign seats in local elections
IT is alleged and as yet unconfirmed that some of the successful Reform candidates in the recent local elections in our county have resigned.
It appears as though they were County Council employees and as national legislation states that such an employee is not able to keep that position if sitting as a councillor on the same authority, they have resigned their seats. It does not bar them from holding office but they must resign their employment. And all candidates must sign to say they understand that when they announce they are standing.
If it is true, there will have to be by-elections in those wards where successful candidates have resigned from office and this could result in a legal challenge from unsuccessful opponents.
Reform almost swept the board at local elections held around the country, including in Durham where they secured a large majority.
