Hamsterley lad’s radio success
A young man from Hamsterley who has produced his show on BBC Radio 6 for the last couple of
years is about to launch himself on BBC World Service with his first radio documentary this Tuesday
(January 14).
Tom Raine (25), who graduated in Spanish and Portuguese from Edinburgh University after spending
his secondary education at Wolsingham School and St John’s RC, Bishop Auckland, has spent the last
six months researching and recording the documentary about Madame Gandhi, a musician, artist
and activist.
Madame Gandhi uses her music to motivate and inspire people to care about climate change.
Tom said, “This 26 minute documentary follows her journey up to the North Pole to record the
sounds of melting glaciers, rare seabirds, waves, pebbles and more, before taking them back to the
studio to turn them into hi-hats, kicks, snare drums, bass tones, and synth sounds.”
The documentary – ‘In The Studio, Madame Gandhi’ – also includes her thesis on how nature music
can encourage people to care about climate change.
Tom, whose parents live in Hamsterley, said he was very pleased and excited to be able to share his
documentary on the well-respected BBC World Service, which broadcasts in almost every country in
the world. You can listen to it on Tuesday 14th January at 4:30am, 1:30pm and 11:30pm across the
day. Tom has been producing at BBC Radio 6 for the last few years and is available to listen to online any time
on the link below after the first broadcast.
“It’s been a treat to pitch and put together something as exciting as this, so I hope everyone enjoys
it,” Tom added.
