THE annual Summer Fayre at Fir Tree was held on the Brewery field on Saturday (June 20) and the sun shone on it from start to finish in more ways than one.
Organised by the indefatigable Residents’ Association, there was something for everyone, including MP, Dr Sam Rushworth. There was music, dance, stalls, food, vintage vehicles, stationary engines and games galore. The sun shone on the village as residents turned out in force to enjoy everything on offer. A dance display from the children of the Mia Sutherland group was eagerly performed and watched by most on the field.

The dog show, sponsored by the Feed Warehouse was another attraction. The whole event had sponsors, including raffle prizes from The Auckland Project, Chester-le-Street Steam and Vintage Fair and Chambers Butchers from Howden-le-Wear. The three main organisers, Alison Hodgson, Elaine Armstrong and Helen Pepper were aided by an army of keen volunteers who did everything from preparing the field to manning stalls. A true community effort.

The village WI was there too, stallholders with everything from sea glass pictures to sunglasses, which were handy as the day was sunny and hot! A tombola, lots of vintage games to play for free too. The vintage vehicles were a crowd puller, especially for the male of the species as was the Welly Toss with the traditional coconut shie being popular with the children. All-in-all, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Well done to one and all.
