Empowering Weardale with Community-Owned Energy

In the heart of Weardale, something remarkable is happening. A group of local residents, united by a shared vision for sustainability and community empowerment, are building a future powered by clean, locally-owned energy. United under the banner of Weardale Renewable Energy CIC (WRE)— a not-for-profit, community interest company with a mission to put power back in the hands of the people.

Who We Are

WRE is a grassroots organisation led by volunteers who care deeply about our valley, our environment, and our future. We’re not a big corporation. We’re your neighbours, friends, and fellow residents — working together to create a more resilient and sustainable Weardale.

What We’re Doing

Our flagship project is a 600kWp ground-mounted solar array at Heights Quarry near Eastgate. This solar farm will generate clean electricity for decades to come, reducing carbon emissions and helping tackle the climate crisis — all while being 100% community-owned.

We’ve already secured CEF funding for the next stage of development and are working with trusted partners to ensure the project is built with ethical materials and delivers real value to our community.

How It Will Be Owned and Managed

The solar farm will be owned and managed by a Community Benefit Society (CBS) — a democratic structure designed to serve the interests of the local community. Anyone who becomes a member of the CBS will have a say in how the project is run, including the right to elect directors to oversee the independent Trust. This ensures that decisions are made by the community, for the community, with transparency, accountability, and long-term benefit at the heart of everything we do.

Why It Matters

This isn’t just about solar panels — it’s about local empowerment. By owning our energy infrastructure, we keep profits in the community, create local jobs, and support future projects that benefit Weardale. It’s a model that’s working across the UK, and now it’s our turn.

The Benefits

  • Clean, renewable energy powering local homes and businesses
  • Community ownership means profits stay local
  • Educational opportunities for schools and young people
  • A stronger, greener local economy
  • A legacy for future generations
