MEMBERS of Durham Fell Runners are reaching the end of an epic relay to help raise funds for the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.
The runners have been active all weekend, beginning early morning at St John’s Chapel on Saturday and following the new 300km Roof of England route. Stretching across the North Pennines, the Roof of England is renowned for its remote terrain and rugged hills, making it a fitting test for runners who thrive on adventure in the fells.
It isa gruelling and ambitious challenge but they are nearing the end with the final tape almost in sight – back to St John’s Chapel where they will arrive today at around 12:30.
A spokesperson said, “As fell runners, we spend hours exploring wild and often isolated places. While we hope to never need them, mountain rescue teams provide an invaluable volunteer service, responding whenever people get into difficulty on the hills.
That’s why we have chosen to raise money for Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team. Every call-out requires highly trained volunteers who freely give their time, funded entirely by charitable donations. Each recruit requires £1,584 of specialist kit, and we would like to fund four new recruits, so our fundraising goal is £6,336.”
