Date set for by-election to be held in County Durham
RESIDENTS are being reminded to register to vote in a by-election set to take place next month.
An upcoming Durham County Council by-election in Easington and Shotton will take place on
Thursday 7 August. Anyone registered on the electoral register and eligible to vote in the election
will receive a polling card with details of their voting preference, after which, residents just need to
vote at an allocated polling station, or by post or proxy. Polling cards are being delivered from
Monday 14 July.
The deadline for postal vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday 23 July, and for proxy vote
applications it is Wednesday 30 July. Residents who have recently moved, or who are not registered
to vote, and have not informed electoral services are encouraged to register online at
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote by midnight on Tuesday 22 July.
Meanwhile, people who are passionate about Easington and Shotton and wish to have their say in
the area’s future are invited to stand as a candidate at the upcoming by-election. Interested
residents can request a nomination pack from Durham County Council by contacting electoral
services on 0300 261 212 or by emailing .

Prospective candidates can submit their nomination papers from Friday 4 July 2025, between the
hours of 10am and 4pm to Electoral Services Office, The Annexe, County Hall, Durham DH1 5UL. The
deadline to submit nomination papers is 4pm on Friday 11 July, and they must be delivered by hand.

Anyone who wishes to vote must be registered to vote in Easington and Shotton and must be able
to provide an acceptable form of photo ID such as a passport, driving licence or concessionary travel
pass, such as an older person’s bus pass. A full list of acceptable forms of photo ID can be found on
poll cards.
Voters who do not have an accepted form of photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority
Certificate at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate . All applications for a
certificate for this election must be sent before 5pm on Wednesday 30 July. If voters need any
