Cast Cattle – A fleshier offering on the whole resulted in trade being up significantly on paper, in reality, slightly firmer on the week to see the sale average 275ppk and £1849. Top per kilo at 352 pence was a super British Blue heifer from D & B Harding, Thornhill Farm; following at 350ppk was an excellent 6-year-old Limousin cow from T Ducker, Coppice House plus great cows from M Shepherd, Fulthorpe Farm at 348ppk and TW Hutchinson, Bail Hill Farm at 344ppk. Top of the gross values in the cows was the aforementioned cracker from M Shepherd; a fleshy 4-year-old Limousin she weighed 719kg and realised £2502. Hereford’s set the pace in the native breed section as W & R Kemp & Son, Wigdon Walls sold an excellent OTM heifer at 322ppk and A Wilson, Calf Close sold a 6-year-old at £2280. Three stock bulls this week were all terrific Limousin’s; JB Luck & Son, Milestone House led the way at 328ppk and £3414 with a pair from J Layfield, Nackshivan Farm sold saw a best of 320ppk and £3139.

Store Cattle – The forward, short keep stores remain an absolutely wonderful trade, arguably some of the smaller and more weathered cattle would look a fraction easier compared to the monumental prices of late. Top of the day at £2700 was a sensational 17-month-old Limousin steer from R G Richardson, East Farm. Second spot this week also went to a Limousin steer, this one hailed from D Robson & Sons, Merryshields Farm and sold for £2490. Top of the native breeds at £2300 was a cracking Aberdeen Angus steer from B & L Robson, Gawen House whilst the leading lady was another Limousin from R G Richardson which sold for £2180. Earlier a scattering of young bulls sold to a top of £2000 from R L Dent, Mount Pleasant Farm with a shapely 11-month-old British Blue.

Store Sheep – The rain has arrived in the region and more faces appeared in the buyer’s gallery, greeting them was a real Noah’s Ark of breeds and creeds with tup lambs aplenty; all classes however remain in high very demand. The mixed offering still achieved a sale average of over £98. Top call went to twenty strong Suffolk lambs from GW Dobson & Son, Wood Close whilst the kings of the continentals at £132 were a quartet of Beltex from MR Cass, Beacon Farm. A host of horned lambs this week topped at £92 from B & R Dixon, Rigg Hall whilst the top Mules proved to be four from M Whorlton, Shepherds House at £105.
Another enormous show of feeding ewes continued in their recent rich vein of form, two lots led the way at £165 as three Texel’s from J & A Ridley, Aydon North were joined by a strong Suffolk from AJ & KM Foster & Son, Coquet Nook. Mule ewes were also topped by the Coquet Nook consignment with seven at £136 whilst the horned ewes were topped at £92 by a pen of twenty-five from B & R Dixon, Rigg Hall.
