Calling all former Auckland clothing factory workers
HIDDEN Story CIC, based in West Auckland, is looking to connect with people who worked in the
garment-making trade at any point in the last 100 years in West Auckland, St Helen Auckland or
Bishop Auckland.
Perhaps at Claremont/Steinberg/West Auckland Clothing Company? Self Made Studios? Other
factories or manufacturers?
‘Talking Tapestries: Stitches in Time’, is a project aimed at archiving and celebrating stories of local
garment workers over the last century, with a little look to the next ten years as well. 1934-2034.
If you’ve been a garment worker, machinist, designer or any other kind of worker in the trade, we
would love to hear your stories, see your photographs and documents and hear about your
memories of factory and family life at those times. Our story-gatherers would love to invite you to
share either in workshops, groups of friends or one-to-one. This will be fully accessible to suit your
needs.
You are also invited to some workshops where we will be making a textile piece to commemorate
all of this history. You don’t need to be able to sew for this and you’ll be supported by facilitators at
an accessible studio in the middle of West Auckland.
The final result will be an exhibition and celebration, plus a permanent digital archive- a chance
to celebrate the contribution of garment worker heritage in the area, with a little party at the end!
If you’d like to be involved, please contact us at the email below and tell us your name, contact
details, where you worked and which years. Also tell us if you’d like to talk to us, to make the final
pieces or both.
We are a local organisation and very keen to hear from as many people as we can.
