Bishop Auckland Civic Society
The next meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society will take place on Monday, 2nd June at Bishop
Auckland Cricket Club on South Church Road (DL14 7JU) at 7.30pm when Dr. Rob Young will address
the Society on the topic of ‘P.O.W. camps in Weardale in the two World Wars’.
Dr. Young specialised in the Prehistoric Archaeology of the Wear Valley for his doctorate and went
on to teach archaeology at both the University of Wales and at Leicester University, subsequently
taking up the post of Archaeologist for Northumberland National Park.
Latterly he was the North East Regional Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Historic England.
Currently working as an Archaeological Consultant, Dr Young is interested in all aspects of the history

and archaeology of the North East. His talk will be of special interest to members as we have one of
the country’s most intact camps on our doorstep at Harperley where hundreds of Italian and
German prisoners of war were held 80 years ago.
*Prior to the public meeting, at 7.00pm, there will be an opportunity for Civic Society members to
express their views and air any issues regarding current developments and events in the town in an
open discussion.
Free to members. Guest £3 – pay on the door.
