BAPTISMAL REGISTER TAKEN TO THE RECORD OFFICE

BAPTISMAL REGISTER TAKEN TO THE RECORD OFFICE
THE Baptismal Register from the now closed Howden-le-Wear Methodist chapel has been handed
over to Durham County Record Office, based at The Story in Durham.
The register was handed to Methodist Minister, Rev Ray Anglesea by Denise Wood who had been
the Baptismal Secretary for many years. Rev Anglesea took the register, which includes every
Baptism from 1963 to 1994, to the Record Office and handed it over to Linda James, Collections
Officer. Linda will catalogue the register and a receipt will be sent to the Methodist Minister at Crook
Dawson Street.
Denise held the register in her safe-keeping for the last 31 years and after her mother, Betty, died,
she handed it over.
Rev Anglesea said, “Sadly, with Dales churches closing, Linda is anxious to inform former church
leaders or members that any artefacts of historical importance should be deposited with the record
office for safe keeping.
“Denise looked after this register and now it will be catalogued for anyone to research in the
future.”
