It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend, David Million.
David began his railway career as a member of the British Rail Youth Training Scheme (YTS) before working in the ticket office at Berwick-upon-Tweed station from 1987. He went on to work with GNER, National Express, and East Coast, working across debt recovery and prosecutions, accounts, and retail.
He later became General Manager of the Weardale Railway, before establishing Bishop Trains in 2012. In 2024, he returned to the Weardale Railway as General Manager, and earlier this year came back once again to Bishop Trains to continue his life’s work in the railway industry.
For almost 20 years, David also managed the Stockton & Darlington Railway Youth Team, one of his proudest achievements. Through his leadership, hundreds of young people were given the opportunity to gain new skills, grow in confidence, and discover a passion for railways and heritage. His commitment to supporting the next generation of railway people leaves a legacy that will endure for many years to come.
Alongside his railway career, David also once served as a Volunteer Special Constable with Durham Constabulary, reflecting his deep sense of duty to his community.
David has been a big part of the railway family and the Bishop Auckland community for decades, and will be greatly missed by many. He was widely respected across the rail community and among passengers and staff alike. His knowledge, commitment, and kindness left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
All of us at Bishop Trains are heartbroken by his passing, and we extend our deepest sympathies to David’s family at this difficult time.
A book of condolence will be placed in the waiting room at Bishop Trains from Monday for anyone who wishes to sign and leave a message. We will also share details of any arrangements to celebrate David’s life in due course. In the meantime, we know the whole railway family and local community will join us in keeping David in our hearts, grateful for his service, and the difference he made to so many lives.
