A scheme designed to reduce congestion caused by roadworks has been recommended for approval.
Next week, Durham County Council’s Cabinet will be asked to note an application to government to introduce a Lane Rental Scheme in County Durham.
Lane Rental Schemes aim to reduce traffic caused by roadworks by charging utilities companies and highways authorities for each day that work is carried out.
Charges will be applied during peak hours, with incentives for working at off-peak times and faster completion dates.
The scheme will focus on major roads and key junctions where disruption is most severe.
Cllr Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “The development of a Lane Rental Scheme is a positive step in our efforts to manage traffic on the county’s roads and reduce congestion.
“The scheme will help improve traffic flow and reduce delays; minimise disruption to local businesses; benefit the environment by reducing the time vehicles are idling; and enhance our coordination with utility companies and contractors.”
As part of the requirements to introduce a Lane Rental Scheme, a six-week consultation was carried out with the public, utility companies and contractors, public transport operators and emergency services.
The consultation included a list of the county’s busiest roads and junctions which will be included as part of a Lane Rental Network.
Following the consultation, the council applied to the Secretary of State for approval ahead of the planned implementation of the scheme in the summer.
Cabinet will be asked to note the update on the scheme when it meets on Wednesday 10 June.
