The magic of Christmas is set to return to Weardale Railway this winter, as the much-loved Santa Express welcomes families back for a festive experience running from 28 November to 24 December.
Promising to be bigger and better than ever, this year’s Santa Express invites visitors of all ages to step into Christmas surrounded by twinkling lights, cheerful elves and festive cheer, all set against the stunning winter backdrop of Weardale.
Tickets were recently released, with those signed up to the official mailing list receiving exclusive early access before general sale via email. A limited number of early bird tickets are available, offering a 10% discount for those quick to secure their seats. With demand expected to be high – particularly for key dates and Christmas Eve – families are encouraged to plan ahead.
The experience begins at Stanhope Station, where guests are immersed in a beautifully decorated heritage setting filled with Christmas music, seasonal treats and plenty of photo opportunities. From there, passengers will board the heritage train for a journey through the Durham countryside.
Onboard, carriages are transformed into cosy festive spaces, complete with table seating ideal for families and groups. Playful elves bring the journey to life with music, laughter and surprises along the way – before a very special visit from Santa himself, who will greet every family and present each child with a gift.
This year, visitors can choose from two ticket options. The Golden Ticket priced from £33 offers the classic Santa Express experience, including a visit from Santa, a gift for every child and shared table seating. For those looking to make the occasion even more special, the VIP Ticket starting from £43 provides additional space and comfort.
Claire Gibbons, General Manager at Weardale Railway, said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing the Santa Express back; it’s a real highlight of the year and has become a firm family tradition every winter. We love seeing generations come together to celebrate Christmas – including those who wrap up warm, arrive in Christmas jumper or their pyjamas ready for photographs. This year, we’ve worked hard to make the experience even more memorable, and we can’t wait to welcome visitors from across the North East and beyond.”
The Santa Express is part of the Weardale Railway’s programme of heritage events, operated by The Auckland Project, a regeneration charity transforming Bishop Auckland into a leading visitor destination. Since 2020, the volunteer-supported railway has revived its heritage services, with themed journeys, afternoon tea trains, gin and cheese trains, and the ever-popular Santa Express at the heart of its calendar.
With limited spaces across selected dates, tickets are expected to sell quickly.
