ANDREA Currah from Wolsingham has retired from the career that has spanned her whole working life.
Andrea took over the Saks franchise hair salon in Hexham in 2001 and is leaving it in the capable hands of her daughter, Shannon who will continue the business. Shannon, who was her mother’s apprentice, will continue with the loyal staff who have worked at the salon for years. Emma Brown from Stanhope is celebrating her 20th year there alongside Jess Smith from Haltwhistle who has clocked up ten years. Both are L’Oréal colour specialists, known for their expertise and dedication to clients.
Alongside the styling and awards, the team has also made a real impact beyond the salon — raising thousands for The Eve Appeal and supporting important work in gynaecological cancer research. So while it’s the end of one chapter, it’s also the start of another.

Andrea, who has spent a total of 43 years in the trade has been at the helm of Saks, Hexham when it has collected national awards, built a loyal client base and become a real and valued part of the Hexham community. Of course, some of her clients are from Weardale and they travel to the Northumberland town especially for Andrea and her team to ‘do their hair’.
But it has never been just about great hair and styles although the team certainly have that covered, it’s always been about the people, the atmosphere and the relationships built on confidence of a job well done.
This milestone marks a huge moment for Andrea, who is retiring after a lifetime in the trade and retiring as an accepted expert in her craft, nationally and locally. She’s been the enthusiastic driving force behind the salon for decades — building the team, mentoring stylists, and creating a space where everyone feels welcome.
And, of course, the salon stays firmly in the family. Andrea is handing the business over to Shannon, who’s ready to take things forward and continue everything that’s made the salon what it is today.

Here’s to 25 years of Saks Hair Hexham — and to Andrea’s amazing career, with Shannon looking forward to the next 25 years.
