THE Cross Keys at Eastgate, run by Gaynor and Brian Irwin, bucks the national trend that has seen many public houses close down.
The Irwins not only manage to keep a healthy business running in an immaculately clean environment but are also inclusive and inventive with what they offer. At the weekend, they organised a Junior Darts competition, an indoor sport that continues to gain momentum with fans around the world. Now, in the wake of the success of teenage darts player, Luke Littler, more and more youngsters are taking up the game.
And so it was that a couple of dozen young players arrived for this junior competition that saw the pub packed to the rafters, just as it is annually with the Hay Show, which took place in February. There were 17 entrants in the 12s and under with the youngest only 7 years old! And nine contestants in the 16s and under. Both were knock-out competitions with Oscar Wilkinson, the winner of the Under 12s and Alfie Emerson, runner-up. It was Alfie Lee from Wolsingham who won through to the 16s and Under final, beating Jamie Peart into second place. Congratulations to them all.

Gaynor was delighted with the success of the competitions. She said, “The turn-out was fantastic, the kids were fantastic, their darts were fantastic, I just can’t believe how well supported this event was. What a night, our first darts 16s and under knockout was a tremendous success.”
She went on to thank everyone who had helped with the event; Catherine Tunstall, Stephanie Smart, Kat Emerson Jessica Willis. The markers, Vicki Jopling and Mr. Martin George, the sponsor.
Gaynor continued, “I must congratulate all of the winners, runners-up and every one of the youngsters who took part. You were all outstanding and it was a great afternoon which turned into a great night – I am so proud of you all”
The youngsters asked her to host another event, which she has promised to do in the October half-term holidays.

Runner-up in the 12s and under was Alfie Emerson.
