Cast Cattle – Some super continental cattle joined a dozen milkers this week, despite a light show of numbers they all found a very fast trade to leave a super sale average of 297ppk and £2139 per head. The cow of the day by some margin was a tremendous 12-year-old British Blonde from P Weightman & Sons, Hallfield Farm which weighed 940kg and sold for a sumptuous 400ppk and £3760. A pair of excellent Limousin cows from AC Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm followed the leader both selling over 360ppk and £3000. Top of the bulls at an equally impressive 428ppk and £3766 was an excellent cross bred OTM from G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside whilst a hefty 1178kg Limousin from K & A Harker, Worsall Grove also impressed reaching £3510. Native breeds were topped today by some smart Aberdeen Angus from A & AG Moralee, Lowfield Farm with a top in the lump of £2385 and a best per kilo of 322 pence. Dairy cow prices were headed by JE Holliday & Son, Woodland House when they sold Montbéliard’s to 286ppk and £2090 and Holstein Friesian’s to 250ppk and £2100.

Store Cattle – A much higher percentage of dairy crosses this week was offered, trade continued at recent strong levels. The young bulls began proceedings and remained in high demand, two vendors topped at £2240 as a superb 12-month-old pure bred Beef Shorthorn from P Turnbull, West House Farm was matched by a shapely British Blue from G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside. Top of the store cattle at £2480 was a strong Limousin steer from W Walker & Sons, High Copelaw, the same good home followed with another at £2380 ahead of the aforementioned Tomlinson’s who sold an Aberdeen Angus steer at £2340. Topping the females this week was a smart Limousin heifer from JT & M Atkinson, Market Place which sold for £2180 just ahead of a Simmental from Copeland Farms, West Auckland at £2170. Smaller cattle destined for a summer grazing remain highly sought after, the majority of the grass bound youngsters continue to trade £1500 to £2000 dependant on breed and quality.

Breeding Sheep – As the ewes and lambs begin to trickle forward the early trade looks very good indeed. Topping the trade at £350 was a pen of five continental shearlings with twins at foot from J Demuschamp, Kirkley House Farm; the same good run also sold similar pens at £345 and £340. An excellent run of Blue Texel and Dutch spotted ewes all with single lambs from H Murray, The Beeches were keenly bid for life as they all sold between £280 and £305 whilst some tidy Blackface ewes with Mule lambs from S & J Myers, Rudland Farm also sold well with twins to £250 and singles to £200.

Feeding Sheep – The numbers begin to really dry up now; trade remains absolutely tremendous. Top of the hoggs at £215 was a thumping Texel tup from KO Stones, Nun Cote Nook. Feeding ewes sold to £205 for a Texel from JR & J Crowe, Bishops Close but top of the day was a strong feeding Suffolk tup from A Martin & Co, Brandon House when he reached £248.
