A council gritter driver, who this year marked 40 years of service, is celebrating after being officially named the first ever Gritter Driver of the Year at this year’s Grit and Glory awards.

Durham County Council’s Gary Lawson, aged 62 from Crook, was recognised for his dedication to winter maintenance, his unwavering commitment to public safety, and his exceptional support for colleagues and communities across County Durham.

Having joined the local authority in 1982, Gary has spent four decades navigating some of the most challenging winter conditions in the region. Known for his skill, calmness under pressure, and deep technical knowledge, he has become a trusted expert within the highways service.

Gary is often endearingly referred to as “the AA” of the team by his colleagues. If something goes wrong with a wagon, plough, or snow blower, Gary is the first person they call.

Throughout the years, he has embraced every step forward in technology, mastering equipment from 1980s Bedfords right through to modern Schmidt snow blowers.

His adaptability, reliability, and passion for the job have made him an invaluable member of the winter maintenance team.

Cllr Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “Gary represents the very best of our winter maintenance service and the hard work and dedication that our staff bring to their roles. His commitment over 40 years is remarkable and his impact on colleagues, residents, and the wider community cannot be overstated.

“I would like to congratulate Gary on this well-deserved recognition of everything he has contributed over the years. He embodies the resilience and enthusiasm we pride ourselves on at the council.”

Beyond his technical skills, Gary is also widely admired for his mentorship. As a qualified winter maintenance assessor, he has trained countless new drivers across the region, supporting them with patience, encouragement, and an infectious enthusiasm for the job.

Gary’s recognition also shines a light on the hard work of the council’s entire gritting team. This winter alone, the team has spent more than 5,000 man-hours treating roads and footpaths across the county; preparing and operating 81 different types of gritters along with seven snow blowers.

The team’s work helps keep the county council’s road network safe during severe weather.
