
A road safety campaign by the Scottish Government to tackle speeding on Scotland’s roads stars 21-year-old Cameron Pinkney in the driving seat. A former pupil at Wolsingham Primary School, Cam has competed in Autotest trials from a young age, following in the footsteps of his father, Richard, who has been crowned British champion more than once.
His success in the sport brought him to the attention of the company responsible for filming the advert, which can be viewed on YouTube and is being shown on Scottish television. He was chosen as the driver in the film where he spent a few days on the shoot and competently drove at high speeds to underline the fact that in Scotland, one in five young drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 are involved in an accident.
Speeding is a dangerous game and there are no extra lives. The campaign reminds young drivers of the potentially devastating consequences of speeding for themselves, their passengers and other road users.
The campaign focuses on computer driving games where participants can ‘re-set’ the game and underlines the fact that in real life, roads do not reset and that the best way to s Young drivers, particularly men aged 17 to 25, are often over-confident and prone to risky behaviours like speeding, tailgating and dangerous overtaking.
As a result, they are more likely to be involved in collisions, especially within the first year after passing their test, and are often at fault. Speeding is a risky game On real roads, you can’t undo a bad decision. Speeding puts you, your passengers, and everyone around you in danger.
The message is to: Keep your speed in check – arrive alive.
The film shows four young men getting into a car and then the driver – Cameron – speeding away, reaching dangerous speeds and frightening his passengers until the one n the front seat asks him what he is doing.
Cameron, who is an electrician, enjoyed the experience.
“It was a good experience”, he said but he doesn’t have any plans to audition for the new James Bond – just yet, anyway.
