The next meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society will take place at 7.30pm on Monday, 26th January at B. A. Cricket Club on South Church Road (DL14 7JU) when Greg McCormick will address the Society on the story of Harry Harbottle ‘Hard on the Outside’.
As a young boy, Greg McCormick was fascinated by his dad’s stories about ‘the olden days’ – which usually meant his Dad’s childhood. His father also passed on stories about his own grandfather, Harry Harbottle. Harry was one of the many Durham miners who emigrated to Pennsylvania in the late 19th century and returned to the North East. Greg himself worked in the scientific branch of British Coal. His later career involved a lot of researching, training and lecturing and he went on to develop his own storytelling skills. ‘Hard on the Outside‘, the story of Harry Harbottle, is told with the benefit of Greg’s personal investigation into the true facts behind his great grandfather’s story.
