A MAN who was brought up in Weardale has been nominated for appointment to the House of Lords.

Nick Forbes, who lived in Wearhead as well as Westgate, is a former pupil of Wolsingham School. His father, Ian, who died earlier this year, was the man who managed Killhope Museum from its inception for many years. Ian and his wife, Pam, were active in many areas of Dale life.

Nick who was honoured in 2019 with a CBE, was born in 1973 and after leaving Wolsingham School, he proceeded to Cambridge University to study social and political sciences  and he later studied for a management diploma from Sheffield Hallam University, and a master’s degree in music from the Open University.

Nick became a councillor in May2000, representing, peculiarly, the Westgate part of the city, and went on to become leader of the Labour group in May 2007. In 2011, he became leader of the council following the local elections and remained as such until 2022.

He enjoyed a very full and successful political career, even being appointed to Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet and now he is on his way to London, to the epitome of political life – the House of Lords.

So, will he choose to become Lord Forbes of Weardale?

Congratulations, Nick, from your many friends in the Dale.
