Alston Moor Federation proudly hosted its annual Prize Evening last week, bringing together pupils, families, staff and community members to celebrate the successes of the 2024–2025 academic year across Nenthead Primary School, Alston Primary School and Samuel King’s School.

The event, held at Church Road in Alston, opened with a warm welcome from Headteacher Rob Dawson, who praised students for their resilience, creativity and commitment throughout the year. The evening also saw the formal presentation of GCSE certificates to last summer’s Year 11 cohort, recognising their hard work and dedication.

Guests enjoyed inspiring addresses from two special speakers: Toby Waggot, the reigning British U16 Sailing Champion, and Dr Sereena Beacher, Honorary Professor at the University of Cumbria. Both speakers encouraged students to embrace challenge, nurture their passions and continue striving for excellence.

A series of prestigious annual awards were presented, celebrating individual achievements across the Federation:

  • Hilda Pickles Award for Contribution to the Arts – Maisey Emery, for her outstanding contribution in Art
  • Saiger Award for All-Round Contribution – Priya Brown
  • Maurice Peddelty Award for Progress – Jake Miller
  • Tony Shields Awards for Academic Excellence – Jess Dyke and Cory McAnneny
  • Chair of Governors’ Award – Lily Bousfield for contribution to school life
  • APS Sports Award – Oliver Southern (school sport and Penrith Rugby)
  • SKS Sports Award – Jack Shepherd (School sport and Haltwhistle Football)
  • Weardale Private Hire Award – Ellie Compton for outstanding conduct.

In addition to awards for senior pupils, prizes were also presented to children from Nenthead School, Alston Primary School, and Samuel King’s School, recognising achievement, progress and contribution across all three schools.

The celebration was enriched by a vibrant programme of performances, including energetic routines by Alston & Eden Dance School, wonderful singing from the school choir, and captivating drama pieces performed by Lily Bousfield and Lucy Bastow.

Headteacher Rob Dawson commented:
“This evening is always a highlight of our year. It is a chance to celebrate our students not only for their achievements, but for the kind, determined and creative young people they are becoming. We are incredibly proud of them all.”

The Federation extends its thanks to families, staff, governors and community partners who continue to support the schools and inspire students to reach their full potential.
