Weardale Young Farmers
WEARDALE Young Farmers club is a long established club within the Dale.
Dating a back to the 1930’s at its inception, it was originally known as the calf club before becoming a Young Farmers Club in the 1940’s, this is a club that has served the community of Weardale’s young people well over many decades.
The idea of the club was to advance education in agriculture and rural life and provide recreational opportunities and events for all young people living in rural areas, some involved in farming but not exclusively.
Weardale Young Farmers actively supports local charities for example in the past they have raised funds for the GNAA Great North Air Ambulance, cancer charities alongside fundraising for their own club. The club participates in competitions with other clubs within County Durham and at Northern Area fostering a community spirit within the dale.
The club meets fortnightly on Tuesday evenings at Eastgate Village Hall with an annual programme of events put together by club members; these include stock judging, pumpkin carving, Easter egg hunts and trips to the Escape Rooms and bowling. The club also has their annual bonfire where funds are raised to help support the club moving forward.
Local businesses and individuals are always very generous in their support of the club, sponsoring clothing, supporting membership fees and providing fireworks, often having been members themselves.
This is a club run by young people, for young people backed with the support of club leaders, presidents and our Life President, Angus Ward, who are all former members.
The club is actively seeking new members between the ages of 10 and 28 to join them with the club recruitment night being held on Tuesday 16th September at Eastgate Village Hall at 7.30pm where all are welcome to come along and see what Young Farmers is all about!
We would love to see you there!

“You don’t have to be a farmer to be a young farmer”
