Cast Cattle – On rolls the cow trade as the weekly ringside of buyers remain keen to buy from a
green as feeding cows in particular remain miles ahead of the red market and deadweight options
available. This week’s offering was an even three way split between continental, native and dairy
cows with an all in average of 248ppk and £1705 per head. Top per kilo at 348 pence was a smart
660kg British Blue from W R Thompson, Sloshes Farm, she was followed twice at 324ppk by a Beef
Shorthorn from W Denham, Dent Gate and a Stabiliser from Skelton Farming Ltd, Stanghow. Leading
the gross values amongst the cows were a couple of fleshy Aberdeen Angus as DA & MAM Brown of
Agglethorpe Hall topped at £2563 with JV Hodgson & Son, Piercebridge Farm following just £20
behind. Eighteen milkers crossed the scale and averaged 211ppk and £1379, the top accolades went
to Holstein Friesian’s as F S Sturrock & Sons, Home Farm sold to £1771 and CN & P Penk, Pitfield
Farm led the prices per kilo at 280 pence. Finally, just the two stock bulls forward were led by a
fleshy Stabiliser from Skelton Farming Ltd when he sold for 282ppk and an impressive £2788.
