Ramblings of an Old Man Part 4.
Doomsday Beckons!
WE are almost at the great day where TWO ticks on a paper will enhance your life forever and at the
same time make several people sad and disappointed. You and only you can decide the future of
your local area for the next four years.
In these last few days before the polls open the hopefuls will be out there shaking hands, kissing
babies (do they still do that?) and offering their undivided attention and devotion for ever. But what
should we expect from the successful candidates when the laurels are handed out and victory is
assured? What makes a good councillor? I’ll tell you….
A good councillor has a responsibility to the electorate who voted them into office. You must be
available to them at all times when they have questions or concerns about anything problematic.
You must give them help and support when needed, seek the answers and keep them updated. You
have to have your area’s best interests at heart at all times and never forget who gave you the
chance to do so.
You must also have the same responsibility to everyone who did not vote for you for whatever
reason as they are your constituents too and deserve the same respect and service. You are there
for all the people and you must never forget that. You also have to be visible in the physical sense in
your area. People old and new need to actually know who you are. So, turn up to the sewing circle
meeting, visit the local pubs, have a regular surgery where the people can actually talk to you. Be a
part of the community. Be nice to people. It’s not hard. Make them feel you’re working for them.
Whether they put you there or not. They’re your people. Look after them.
That’s how it should be. The power is in your hands. Come the day do not forget you have TWO
votes for two candidates, not one vote as has been bandied about. The other old chestnut has also
been heard ” If you didn’t vote for me you’re getting nothing “( that was the clean version) but not as
yet the one from the previous campaign ” You know what happens to people who don’t vote for me
” Nice to have such a caring attitude.
So that’s it. Use your votes wisely and elect people who will actually care and make a difference.
It’s your choice.
We will be back next week with the post mortem, or is it the stewards enquiry. Time will tell. Until
then…
BT.
