VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE CORONER’S COURT
By Sue Atkinson-Millmoor
WOULD you like to help local people?
That is the question I answered when I retired and was looking for a way to give back to my local
community. I volunteer for a registered charity who work in the county Durham and Darlington
coroner’s court based in Crook and I find it overwhelmingly satisfying.
As volunteers we meet and greet families at the court, help answer questions about what is going
to happen on the day, make them a cuppa and just generally listen to people at one of their most
difficult times.
There is lots of support around from those who work in the court team and colleagues who also
volunteer. I had some very helpful training and had a chance to shadow other volunteers before
becoming a full member of the team.
If that question intrigues you too then here is your chance to answer. We are looking for
volunteers – is this something you think you would want to join? The minimum commitment is only
two days a month but you can do more if you want to – I would highly recommend it!
There are people you can chat to before you decide to go ahead so that you know it is right for
you. For more information see our website Coronerscourtsupportservice.org.uk or email
