Weardale Museum 40 th Birthday
ON May 18th the Weardale Museum in Ireshopeburn turns 40, marking four decades of preserving
the history and heritage of Weardale and its people.
To celebrate its 40 th birthday the Museum is holding a series of talks and exhibitions throughout
Weardale and the surrounding area. All are welcome.

Main birthday events:
16 th May
7-9pm
“Journeying with the People Called Methodists”, a celebration of High
House Chapel at Weardale Methodist Church, Stanhope*
17-18 th May Methodist Tapestries Collection exhibition at the Lord Crewe Arms,
Blanchland
*Led by Lord Leslie Griffiths and includes the presentation of the Durham County Council Chairman’s
Medal to Emeritus Curator David Heatherington.

9 th May Archaeological and Historical Research in Weardale: Back to our Roots by

10 th May The Creation of a Weardale Heritage Centre by Phil Newbold at

14 th May Quilting: A Cover Story by Sue Hinde at Eastgate Village Hall
23 rd May Stories behind the CofE churches in Weardale by Bill Heslop at the
Barrington Hall, St John’s Chapel
24 th May A Family History Story by Ken Heatherington at Wearhead Village Hall
26 th May Disappearing Farms – How it all began by Chris Ruskin at Cowshill and
Lanehead Village Hall
30 th May The Tapestry Project by David Heatherington and Eileen Steinbock at
Westgate Village Hall
6 th June From Weardale to the World – The extraordinary story of Frosterley
Marble by Paul Frodsham at Frosterley Village Hall and Institute
7 th June The Weardale Railway Past and Present by John Askwith at St Thomas’
Church Hall, Wolsingham
7-9pm. Refreshments, the Museum shop, and birthday raffle tickets will be available. Entry is £5
(includes a glass of wine/tea/coffee and a biscuit).
