The ramblings of an old man. (Part one )
AS many an old blues man has sang… ” Well I woke up this morning and”… lo and behold a flood of
political propaganda came through my letterbox.
Two yawns, a scratch of parts various and a rub of the eyes later and I realised it’s election time!
Yes folks it’s that once in four yearly visit of the travelling circus of aspiring politicians all craving your
vote.
Old contemptibles, new faces, no hopers and snake oil salesmen who, with your vote, will
transform your lifestyle into a utopia you could never have dreamed of. Aye right. But…
Maybe the times they are a-changing. We are now Weardale and Tow Law. We may see a different
voting pattern. Who knows? Many of the old guard of voters are no longer with us. The new
electorate may not even know who their councillors are. As for the new younger generation they will
not necessarily vote to maintain the status quo.
As the official candidates list will not be published until April 2nd for the moment let’s just assess
the various parties’ prospects.
The Conservatives have been out on the stump for many weeks and have certainly put in the hard
yards. Their downside is coming in on the back of a poor general election result. But who knows. This
is Weardale not Westminster.
Labour haven’t been seen much so far. They’re probably looking for my fuel allowance. Time will
tell.
Reform. The hitherto unknown quantity. Now flying high and saying what you want to hear and
striking fear into the main parties. Could this be first time lucky?
Lastly the non party Independents who have held the Weardale seats for years. But is there an ill
wind blowing? Is it time for change?
We’ll have a closer look next week when the heads appear above the parapet.
Until then…….
BT.
