WALL DEMOLITION CHANGES FACE OF GATEWAY TO WOLSINGHAM
BORN in 1791 during the reign of King George lll, Charles Attwood, began the building of his new
steelworks in Wolsingham at the age of 73 in 1864.
What would grow into a huge complex of buildings was enclosed by a stone wall that edged the
main road at the east end of Wolsingham. The works is long gone and now a new housing estate is
being built. That wall, one of the last vestiges of the steelworks that provided work for so many
households over almost a century and a half was pulled down yesterday (February 25 th ) to make
way, presumably for the new entrance to the estate.
Just a few weeks ago, the Gazette reported on mortar falling from the wall, perhaps caused by the
vibrations from the on-going foundational works. Now, the wall is down and it has changed the face
of the entrance to the Dale.
