Council seeks independent members for Audit Committee

A council is looking for people who want to play an important role in scrutinising and reviewing its financial affairs and how it is governed.

Durham County Council is calling for applicants to join its Audit Committee, which helps to review how the local authority, and its Cabinet, governs, and manages its risks and finances.

A successful candidate will need to show their willingness to take part in meetings, and to take independent, unbiased and objective views based on evidence from documents provided to them.

Experience of audit, assurance and financial management would be helpful for the role, although not essential, along with an understanding of corporate governance, risk management, and working in a complex organisation.

Cllr Darren Grimes, Durham County Council’s deputy leader and Cabinet member for Finance, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to be directly involved in helping with reviewing and providing assurance on our finances and governance arrangements. We’d welcome applications from people of all life backgrounds as we want to make sure our committees reflect the communities we serve.”

The role is unpaid and would be over a four-year period from April 2027 until April 2031. The committee meets six to seven times a year at the local authority’s offices in Durham City, and members are able to recover reasonable expenses incurred in attending these meetings.

Those interested in applying for the role can request an application pack by emailing . An informal discussion about the role can also be requested through this email.

The closing date for applications is 11.59pm on Sunday 1 November 2026. Interviews for the role are expected to take place on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November.
