Excursions by Rail has announced the return of The Edinburgh Express, its popular charter train running direct from Weardale to Edinburgh onboard the iconic high speed Intercity 125, following its sold-out debut in 2025.
Due to popular demand, the premium excursion will once again take passengers on a scenic journey through County Durham up to the Scottish capital, departing on the 7th of November from Stanhope, Frosterley, Wolsingham, Witton-le-Wear, Bishop Auckland and Darlington.

Passengers onboard The Edinburgh Express can choose between First Class or Standard Class. First Class guests will enjoy a full breakfast service on departure and a luxury three-course dining service on return at their seat in a premium first-class carriage.
Standard Class passengers can relax in comfortable seating while enjoying the scenery on the second ever direct service from Stanhope to Edinburgh, with a trolley service offering snacks and drinks during the journey.
Once in Edinburgh, guests will have a generous five hours to explore the city at their own pace, whether that’s shopping on Princes Street or St James Quarter, walking the Royal Mile, visiting the National Museum of Scotland or even Edinburgh Castle – The choice is theirs.
Earlier this year Excursions by Rail operated The High Speed Sonnet, offering a luxury day excursion to the home of Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon, to much fanfare from passengers.
In June 2026 Excursions by Rail operated the Rail Live Express, taking rail industry experts direct to Rail LIVE from London to raise money for Railway Children, a charity that focuses on saving and changing the lives of vulnerable children at risk of or currently living on the streets.
