A PROJECT that aims to create 100 walks and stories will focus on the heritage of the county has founded a walk in Wolsingham.
Keiron Young is the creator of the project and said, “Heritage 100 is designed to showcase the history and Environmental Heritage of County Durham. We want people to discover the seriously underrated County Durham countryside from the Heritage coast, through the Vale of Durham and Durham Dales.
“By ‘collecting’ the walks we turning people into walkers, giving them all of the associated physical and mental health benefits. But we also aim to support businesses in areas where H100 walks are located and give places a walking experience they can enjoy and be proud of.”
His aim is to create another seven walks in the Dale – at Frosterley, Westgate, Stanhope, St John’s Chapel, Rookhope and Wearhead – subject to approval from locals as well as Durham County Council. Keiron’s group is also helping to preserve footpaths and working with other volunteers in our communities to create what he describes as ‘a true legacy project that will remain part of the landscape in perpetuity’.
As part of Heritage 100, Walk 25 has recently been installed as the first in Weardale, in Wolsingham.
“Weardale is arguably, the county’s walking capital, this new walk – Walk 25 – is located in Wolsingham and follows the River Wear downstream before heading up onto the hillside and walking back towards the town, said Keiron. “As a rural walk you can expect a few tricky stiles and you may encounter cattle but a beautiful six- mile wander around lower Weardale.”
