FIR TREE WI MAKES BUNTING FOR THE KING
MEMBERS of Womens Institutes around the county, including those in Fir Tree WI have been busy
making red, white and blue bunting for the forthcoming visit of The King and Queen.
HM King Charles, accompanied by HM Queen Camilla, will arrive in Durham City on April 17 th to
attend the annual Maundy service, this year to be held in the magnificent Durham Cathedral. There
they will distribute the traditional Maundy money to 76 men and 76 women – the number
corresponds with the age of the Monarch.
Durham Parish Council sent out a request to the County’s Wis to make sustainable bunting to
help decorate Saddler Street and Silver Street. There wasn’t much time so the ladies set to work to
help make and deliver the 500m of bunting needed to help celebrate this historic occasion. Fir Tree
WI set themselves the task of making and donating 50m. The measurements had to be exact with
each flag being a specific size and sewn on to tape 30cms apart to cater for security cameras. The
Parish Council provided the material.
The bunting will remain after the Royal visit to help celebrate the 80 th anniversary of VE Day to
held in May. It was made at Fir Tree by Maureen Wilkinson, Helen Pepper, Sharon Butler and Karen
Fatkin.
