Samuel King’s School, Alston, has welcomed the findings of its latest Ofsted inspection, which highlights the school’s continued improvement journey, inclusive culture and unwavering commitment to the wellbeing and success of every pupil.

The inspection found that Samuel King’s School meets the Expected Standard across attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Inspectors also confirmed that safeguarding arrangements are effective and that pupils feel safe, supported and valued.

Inspectors recognised the significant work undertaken by school leaders to improve attendance and behaviour. The report highlights that pupils rise to the school’s high expectations, display positive attitudes to learning and learn in a calm, purposeful environment where lessons are rarely disrupted.

The report also praises the school’s creative and personalised approach to supporting young people, particularly those facing barriers to education. Inspectors confirmed the school’s own judgement that ‘achievement’ still needs further attention.

A key area identified by inspectors was the school’s commitment to inclusion. The report states that leaders have embedded effective systems to identify and support pupils who face barriers to learning or wellbeing, ensuring “every pupil receives the support they need to thrive.”

Inspectors praised the support provided for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), noting that these pupils access the same curriculum as their peers and make progress in line with others.

The value of various school initiatives such as the Learning Bus and the Inclusion Base were highlighted, providing vulnerable pupils with a strong sense of belonging and community.

The report recognises school leaders and governors for sharing a clear vision and maintaining an accurate understanding of the school’s strengths and areas for development.

Inspectors noted that leaders consistently make decisions in the best interests of pupils and that the school “continues to progress on its journey of improvement.”

Governors were praised for providing both challenge and support, while staff reported being proud to work at the school and valued the caring approach taken by leaders towards staff wellbeing and professional development.

Despite the challenges associated with a rural location, inspectors recognised the school’s determination to provide pupils with a broad and ambitious curriculum that prepares them for future success.

Teachers were praised for their secure subject knowledge, effective assessment practices and ability to adapt teaching to meet the needs of learners.

Inspectors were particularly positive about the school’s commitment to broadening horizons. Pupils benefit from a wide range of clubs, residential visits and international experiences, including newly established trips to Edinburgh and Berlin.

The report notes that leaders actively remove barriers to participation, ensuring all pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, can access these enriching experiences.

The school’s careers programme was also recognised for helping raise aspirations and ensuring pupils move on to appropriate education, employment or training opportunities.

Ofsted found that parents value the school’s nurturing, close-knit environment and the strong relationships between pupils and staff. These positive relationships contribute to many families choosing Samuel King’s School from beyond the immediate local area.

Inspectors also recognised the school’s wider contribution to the community, highlighting its role as a local hub that welcomes professional services onto the site to support local families.

Headteacher Rob Dawson said:

“We are delighted that this report recognises the tremendous commitment of our staff, governors, pupils and families. It reflects the caring, inclusive and ambitious community we have built together.

The new Ofsted report card has raised the bar again for schools, the ‘expected standard’ means that a schools are delivering a high-quality standard of education in those areas, we are pleased with the outcome of our latest inspection.

We are particularly pleased that Ofsted recognised the strength of our safeguarding culture, the positive relationships across our school and the wide-ranging support we provide for pupils, especially our most vulnerable young people.

While we remain ambitious and focused on improving outcomes further, this report confirms that we are moving firmly in the right direction. We know achievement at the end of Key Stage 4 still needs some work, and we will continue to develop this area as we move forward”.
