NOT even the rain and clart could dampen spirits at this year’s Egremont Crab Fair, where Jack Brown of Haydon Bridge once again underlined his status as one of Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling’s finest.

Battling through heavy showers and a sodden ring, Brown stormed to the 14st World Championship title for the third time. In the final against Kendal’s James Hayhurst, he took the opening fall with a skilful twist off a left-side buttock before sealing victory in style with an inside hipe.

The hardy crowd, huddled beneath umbrellas, roared their approval as Brown celebrated another crown to add to his growing haul.

This latest success completed a remarkable treble in just over a month. In August, Brown lifted the 13st championship at Allendale before following up with the 12st title at Keswick Show. Egremont provided the perfect stage for number three.

It has been quite a journey. Brown captured his first championship at the age of just 14 and, aside from 2015 and the Covid hiatus of 2020–21, has claimed at least one title every year since. His tally now stands at 24 championships, and by conquering every weight category he has already secured his place in the history books as the first wrestler ever to complete the full senior set.

The all-time record remains the preserve of the legendary Tom Harrington with 45 titles. But at only 30, Brown has time firmly on his side – and on current form, few would bet against him one day rewriting the record books.

With are now reaching the end of an enjoyable grass season, including Stanhope Show where Jack was victorious again and with only two events left on the calendar; Alwinton Show and Wasdale Head Show both on 11th October. The wrestling clubs at Rothbury, Carlisle, Kendal and Waberthwaite will start their indoor winter training ready for next year.
