Anniversary Show of Store Cattle
Thanks go to long standing DfAM customer Ricky Alder, Ponteland for undertaking the judging duties this morning. Some high-quality animals attended to celebrate our six years at Humbleton Park; the champion rosette went to a terrific 19-month-old Limousin heifer from the Jorica Herd of the Knaggs family, Sadberge. The sire of today’s champion is none other than the prolific Glenrock Topgun, a bloodline that requires no introduction, particularly for anyone who witnessed the great cattle from this good line at our Limousin sale back in May. Reserve champion went to the winner of the steer class, a brilliant 13-month-old Limousin from Frosterley based F Ward, Rogerley Hall. The Rogerley cattle are always highly sought after and this lad was no exception, one that’s sure to turn out an excellent butcher’s beast.

Cast Cattle – Six years on this site had a celebratory feel to it today, all classes of stock sold to a flying trade and the cows were no exception. A better show than last week and trade certainly sharper to suit the improved goods as the average landed at 246ppk and £1652 per head. Some fine females from Five Houses led the trade, a beautiful Limousin heifer topped per kilo at 384 pence whilst a superb British Blue cow from the same home led the gross values when she sold for £3151 (382ppk). The Five Houses fever continued with other heifers at 380ppk and 376ppk which sandwiched a smart OTM from GK, KN & GJ Hird, Meadow View which sold at 378ppk. The hot Hird pen achieved gross values of £2627 and £2688 whilst a thumping Stabiliser cow from ER & GI Younger, High Trewhitt was more than impressive reaching £2715 in the lump. Beef Shorthorn’s showed the way in the native breed ranks, a fine run from Sykes Produce, New Farm Bungalow hit highs of 298ppk and £2033. Not the fleshiest offering of Friesian cows topped at 240ppk from R Tookey & Son, Butterknowle and £1641 from GW & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington Grange. All four stock bulls were native breeds this week, the best of them an excellent 1018kg Hereford from John Archer, New Moor Farm sold for 254ppk and £2585.

Store Cattle – Sensational scenes in the store ring as a fabulous trade ensued for all shapes, ages, breeds and sizes. The numbers are astonishing as the store steers jumped £378 on the year to level at £1936 and the heifers rose £225 to average £1797. A young show of bulls looks every bit as good as the clean however less age on the year saw them drop £103 to average £1545.
Beginning with the bulls and some perfection from the Proctor’s of Swarland Old Hall saw them head back up the A1 with all four top prices; the 10-12-month-old lovely Limousin’s sold to a top of £2510 with a pen average of £2372. As mentioned, plenty of youth in the bull ring, JW Richardson, Railway Terrace sold 6-month-old British Blue bulls to a top of £1960 and C Peckitt & Son, College Farm turned out a great run to see 6-month-old Charolais to £1920 and 5-month-old Limousin’s to £1680.
An incredible seventy-two steers and heifers sold at £2000 or more, highlights were plentiful and certainly included a marvellous run of strong stores from Five Houses, Yarm. The fantastic Five Houses sold steers to top at £2700 for a 25-month-old British Blue and heifers hot on their heels to peak at £2640, also a British Blue. Aberdeen Angus led the native breed cattle, a super heifer from JV Hodgson & Son, Piercebridge Farm topped at £2520 and a cracking pair from Y Kettle, Brydale Farm followed at an impressive £2240. As with the bulls the younger end looked tremendously well sold, 13-14-month-old steers from the prize-winning F Ward sold four times between £2180 and £2260; 10-month-old Limousin’s from E Parson, Newstead Farm topped at £2110- and 5-6-month-old Charolais heifers from C Peckitt & Son sold to tops of £1540.
Earlier in the sale a sharp trade for all classes in the breeding cattle occurred, the highlight was no doubt a smart 8-year-old British Blue cow with a Limousin heifer calf at foot from C Bell, The Pry which sold for £4500.

Store Sheep – With the cattle enjoying proceedings in one ring the sheep vendors were certainly enjoying their own celebrations to mark six years on this site, feeding ewes remain in marvellous form and the store lambs today looked the dearest witnessed for a very long time. The lamb averaged jumped £10 to see them level at £124.60 and a largely lean offering of ewes averaged £115.29; the honest appraisal would be that lambs are £15 up on the week and ewes are exactly the same good trade.
Top of the lambs at £173 were a quality quartet of Beltex from MR Cass, Beacon Farm; the same stunning run also provided five at £170 and eight at £168. Any amount of the best lambs today trading £140 to £160; running lambs £110 to £140 dependant on size and those under £100 are either miniature, rare breeds or the smaller end of the tup lambs. Mule lambs in demand, nineteen fair sorts from DM & PM Nelson, Skelding Grange topped at £128, the same home sold their next twenty-six at £122.
Feeding ewe trade is as fit as fire, top at £265 were a lovely pair of Texel’s from A&R Thompson, Dimmingdale; the fleshier continental ewes are all over £200, well-bred continentals, £160 to £200. Mule ewes £130 to £160 with a touch of flesh, £90 to £120 if lean and over 100 horned ewes averaged £69 and topped at £108.

Rearing Calves-
A younger show of calves on offer today overall, however a strong trade with a sale average of £563. Many Thanks today go to Mr Paul Tallentire of Carlton Grange, for expertly judging the Anniversary show of calves. Today’s champion went to Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides, with a terrific British Blue Heifer achieving £1000, sold to B Cowton, Low West House. Reserve Champion went to Deerness Valley Dairy of High Hedley Hope, with a cracking young British Blue Bull, which sold to today’s judge for £780. A Pair of Inra95 Heifers from P&CA Harrison, Breckney Hill averaged £840, whilst a pair of Shorthorn Heifers from A Wilson, Calf Close, averaged £705. A fantastic run of Hereford bulls and heifers from Deerness Valley Dairy reached heights of £620 for bulls and £580 for heifers. Another run of 13-50 day old Black and white bulls from WD Richardson, Manor Farm, show a strong trade, topping at £360. Angus Bulls from Broom Mill Farms, High Hill House, topped at £700, whilst the same home reached £670 with an Angus Heifer. British Blue heifers from Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides, reached £855, whilst a Simmental Heifer from JT Forster & Son, Killerby Farm, made £670. Fleckvieh bulls from N&AD Brass & Son, Ox Close Farm, reached £320.
