The next meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society will take place on Monday, 1st June at 7.30pm at The Cricket Club on South Church Road (DL14 7JU) when genealogist and local historian, Margaret Hedley, will address the Society on the topic ‘Women of the Durham Coalfield’.
Margaret has written a trilogy of books focusing on her grandmother’s family from the 19th century up to the pit closures in 1960s East Durham which show the equal role women played in shaping daily life during periods of turmoil and, for some, tragedy.
(The final book in her trilogy featuring her grandmother Hannah’s granddaughter included a foreword written by Hilary Rodham Clinton, herself descended from a Durham coalfield family of which she is very proud).
